Free Mencap seminar on making a Will or Setting up a Trust
As a parent of a child or adult with a learning disability it can be hard not to worry about what will happen in the future when you are no longer around.
Reading Mencap is delighted to be hosting a free seminar on Monday 10 June at 7pm with solicitor Alexandra Wright from Rowberry Morris who can offer advice on making a Will, setting up a Trust, and Powers of Attorney.
She can also give guidance on what to do in cases where your child lacks the capacity to make decisions for themselves and how to apply to be a deputy to make decisions on their behalf.
It is particularly important for parents of children with a learning disability to work out the best options for the future because any inheritance of money or property could impact on any means-tested benefits they are entitled to or leave them in a vulnerable position.
Alexandra advises that is particularly important to set out your wishes for the future when you have a family member who is reliant on your care.
She said: “It is natural to worry about what will happen to your loved ones when you are no longer around and it is not always easy to know what to do for the best, especially if you are the parent of a child with a learning disability.
“Taking legal advice and talking through the options available to you can help take away some of this worry and help you plan a secure future for those you leave behind.”
The seminar will be at Reading Mencap, 21 Alexandra Road, Reading RG1 5PE. There will be the opportunity to ask questions. Refreshments will be served.
