Advice on finding reliable service providers.

IN THE NEWS

Sad to read that a firm of solicitors with four offices has ceased to trade (Willmetts) You may think others in competition will be pleased but we like a strong profession. Their clients will be worried about what to do. Panic not!  Solicitors are the exception to the general rule about going bust. Unlike other businesses your money and property should be safe.  The whole profession provides a guarantee. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (0870 606 2555) and the Law Society are there to help and make sure everything is done properly.

If you were affected, what can you do?  Legal advice is available.  What I would do is:-

If you are in the middle of a transaction – get your papers together and take immediate legal advice. Often you can be protected against disaster but only by acting promptly.

Safeguard what you have – look after any papers - do you have a copy of your will?  A photocopy will can be good enough for the moment but make sure your family know where you keep it.  Get the original will and any deeds as soon as possible.  Time to review your will?  Check who you appointed as executors and change the will if necessary.
